Serving Local Governments with G.I.S.

Welcome to COMMUNITY GIS

Southern Tier West has been given the opportunity to serve GIS to local governments via the Internet.  In 2000, the Community GIS Program began through a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.  Selected communities created new data or gave Southern Tier West existing data that was put into GIS format to be seen in a viewer.  With this, communities are to perform numerous operations with their data, each according to their own needs.

Becoming A Member

Your community must have a use for the system and understand the basic premise behind GIS and be able to demonstrate how you will use the system in your community.  Practical uses include economic development, infrastructure management, planning, assessment, code enforcement, and public safety.

Reliable Internet Access

Ensure that whomever will be utilizing the system has reliable internet access and a web browser; preferably Internet Explorer 6.x.  High-speed access is not required, however higher speeds will greatly improve performance.
Southern Tier West staff is always here, ready to help Community GIS members.
Our staff has combined experience of over 20 with GIS and computers.

Financial Commitment

Your community must commit financially to the project.  Southern Tier West offers several options on how to take advantage of Community GIS.  They are described under the "Fee Structure Tab"

Your Community's Needs

Work with Southern Tier West staff to develop a viewer that best suits your community needs in terms of data, tools, and the interface.
